Pear Shaped Engagement Rings – Why it’s a Beautiful Alternative

Pear shaped engagement rings make a beautiful alternative to the square and rectangular shapes a lot of women chose.  Usually set as a solitaire, this shape is also known as the teardrop although the only tears you will see on receipt of such a fantastic ring are those of happiness.

The shape comes from the one rounded side with the other tapering off into a point. There are 58 facets in the brilliant cut stones used to make this style of ring.  It is quite common for buyers to pick a loose diamond and have it mounted into their favorite gold or platinum band.   Most often the stone is set using the prong setting as the other settings would take away from the unique shape of pear shaped engagement rings.

Some people love the teardrop shape but don’t like solitaire rings so they will go for a cluster setting with smaller diamonds around the main stone.  It is much easier to find a co-coordinating wedding band for this second style although a lot of people think that the setting takes away from the beauty of the shape. Personally I think it is ultimately down to the lady who is going to be wearing it as to what style she prefers.

Pear shaped engagement rings must be made from stones cut by a skilled craftsman.  All too often you will see these styles where one side is bigger than the other. This is a mistake and it devalues the ring.  There should be perfect symmetry on both sides with the point of the diamond going sharply in a v shaped prong.  This also protects the most vulnerable part of the stone from chipping.  The style of the cut can cause the appearance of dark shadows within the diamond but a good jeweler will reduce this effect with a great cut.

If you love the pear shape but don’t particularly want a diamond as your main stone, you can find some exquisite sapphire or other gemstone teardrop shaped rings.   With gemstone engagement rings, it is common to have the gemstone as the main or center stone and have diamonds surrounding it.  You could skip the diamond but your ring will look more like a dress ring than a ring linked to marriage.

The pear shape wasn’t that common in olden times so there isn’t a large number of antique ones around although you can find some if your heart is set on a vintage ring.  You should contact the specialist jewelers and auction houses in your area and tell them what you are looking for so they can alert you if they find one.  They may even be able to help you source your precious purchase.

The great news is that there are plenty of diamond accessories to complement pear shaped engagement rings. Your husband will be able to celebrate your wedding anniversaries with teardrop shaped earrings and other accessories.  And when you make it to your diamond wedding anniversary a pear shaped diamond pendant would go down a treat!
